Buni TV Unveils Fresh, Exclusive Comedy Series

Buni TV is an on demand service and web/mobile distribution platform that aims to become the premier destination for top-quality, independent pan-African video. They are most widely known for their excellent Kenyan satirical show The XYZ Show which is reminiscent of British ITV’s Spitting Image and is inspired by France’s Les Guignols de l’Info.

With this new series, it has launched its own customised content. There are 40 episodes bearing provocative and evocative titles like Sexual Olympics Academy, The Cursed Kenyan, What to Expect in Africa or White Savior Inc. The comedy series assembles an exciting  ensemble of young talents from Kenya and Africa. The move comes shortly after CEO and co-founder of Buni Media, Marie Lora-Mungai, predicted the possibility of content specially created for the video on demand services, at the recently held Mobile Web East Africa in Nairobi.

Mugambi Nthiga, best known as “Cedric” from Kenya’s first Oscar entry Nairobi Half Life (which Ciné Kenya featured here), is a film, TV and stage actor with experience on theatre stages and sets in Kenya, Philadelphia and New York City. Marie Lora-Mungai along with being CEO of Buni Media, is also the CEO and founder of Buni Tv. She states

“We at Buni TV believe that the future of entertainment is highly engaging, highly customized content produced with a specific audience in mind, just like what Netflix did with House of Cards. A large section of Buni TV viewers comes to the site to watch The XYZ Show, and we wanted to give them more to enjoy.”

Kenyan actress Peres Owino is a Los Angeles based writer, director, producer, actress and comedian who has appeared in over two dozen stage plays, including HamletLysistrata and her own play CUT which was shown at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, she studied at  Groundlings Improvisational Comedy School and regularly performs at comedy clubs across Los Angeles. She is currently working with Isaiah Washington on her documentary Africans VS African Americans: Healing the silent sibling rivalry. She stars in the comedy sketch ‘Attract a Man with Sweat Elixir’ which you can view here.

Samba Schutte is a Dutch-Mauritanian actor, writer and comedian who was born in Mauritania and raised in Ethiopia. In 2006 he won the biggest national comedy prize in Holland, which was followed by a tour of international performances. In 2011 was made a regular at The World Famous Comedy Store in Hollywood after his first audition. See him perform in the comedy sketch ‘Jazel Shah for Africa’ here.

Nick Troy is an actor, writer and comedian who started his professional career in Swahili comedy TV series Vioja Mahakamani. His parents being missionaries, he has lived in Kenya and Ethiopia. He has worked extensively on stage & screen in Nairobi and LA, including starring along with Schutte in I Think My Facebook Friend Is Dead. See him perform in the episode ‘The Caucasian Curse’ here.

Buni TV gather African films from the latest film festival darlings, to trendy music videos and the funniest animations. By having all this information and video links in one place, it makes it easy for viewers to discover some of the most thought-provoking and enjoyable video content being produced in Africa. Buni TV also gives independent producers a new distribution platform for their work, and a direct access to a global audience of curious, engaged, culture-loving viewers. Buni TV shares all its advertising revenue with content owners such as producers and filmmakers on a 50/50 basis.

The platform that specialises in Africa video content can be accessed through their website on desktops and on other devices including mobile phones and tablets. Research by MarketsAndMarkets, studies showed the global mobile content market would grow to a US$3.36 billion by 2018.

The comedy series will be released over the next coming weeks. The beautiful graphic work was done by Barbara Muriungi of New Colony Studio and the wonderful photography by Monica Obaga.
